Mini Skid Trencher Safety & Operation Guide
Critical Safety Rules
- Call 811 Before You Dig: This is non-negotiable. Trenchers are "blind" cutters and will snap a gas, water, or power line in seconds.
- The "Danger Zone": Keep all bystanders at least 25 feet away from the machine. The digging chain can kick up rocks or debris with significant force.
- Stay Clear of the Chain: Never attempt to clear rocks, roots, or mud from the chain while the engine is running. Stop the machine and relieve hydraulic pressure first.
-
Pinch Points: Keep hands and feet away from the "crumber" (the bar behind the chain) and the boom.
Operating Instructions
- Preparation: Position the machine at the start of your trench line.
- Engagement: Engage the auxiliary hydraulics so the chain spins down and toward the machine.
- Trenching Technique: Always travel in REVERSE. Do not try to trench while driving forward.
-
Using the Crumber: Ensure the crumber bar is lowered behind the chain. This "scrapes" the bottom of the trench, leaving it clean for your pipe or wire.
Important "Pro-Tips" for Best Results
- Dealing with Rocks: If you hit a large rock, stop immediately. Do not "bounce" the boom on a rock; this will snap the chain or damage the drive motor. You may need to shift the trench line or remove the rock manually.
- Chain Tension: If the chain looks "loose" or is sagging off the bottom of the boom, stop and call JBL Equipment. Running a loose chain can cause it to jump off the sprocket.
-
Ground Moisture: Trenching in bone-dry, hard-packed clay is difficult. If the ground is like concrete, lightly pre-wetting the area an hour before trenching can help the teeth "bite."
Inspection & Return
-
- Teeth Inspection: Check the "cup" teeth and carbide bits for excessive wear or missing hardware.
- Clean the Boom: Please hose off heavy mud and debris from the chain and the spoils auger (the screw on the side that moves dirt away from the hole).
- Hydraulic Hygiene: Always wipe the flat-face couplers clean before connecting to your loader.
Technical Support: If the chain gets stuck or the hydraulics seem weak, do not force the machine. Call us at (435) 708-1927 for guidance.
