SHY15 Mini Excavator Safety & Operation Guide

Critical Safety Rules

  • Stability First: Always lower the Dozer Blade into the ground before you begin digging. The blade acts as your stabilizer; digging without it down can cause the machine to tip or "hop."
  • Utility Awareness: Call 811 before digging. The SHY15 can easily sever high-voltage lines or water mains common in Iron County residential areas.
  • The "Red Bar" (Safety Lock): Before exiting the cab or starting the engine, ensure the red safety lock lever is in the UP (Locked) position. This disables all hydraulics to prevent accidental movement.
  • Roll-Over Protection: Always wear your seatbelt. If the machine begins to tip, do not jump out. Stay inside the ROPS (Roll-Over Protective Structure) frame.

Operating Instructions

  • Start-Up: Ensure the throttle is at 25%. Turn the key to "On," wait 5 seconds for the fuel pump, then turn to "Start." Let the Kubota diesel engine warm up for 5 minutes.
  • Joystick Controls (ISO Pattern):
    • Left Joystick: Move forward/back to extend/retract the Arm (Stick). Move left/right to Swing the cab.
    • Right Joystick: Move forward/back to lower/raise the Main Boom. Move left/right to Curl/Dump the bucket.
  • The Foot Pedals:
    • Drive Levers: Push both forward to move straight. Use them together for smooth turns.
    • Swing Boom Pedal: The SHY15 features a swing boom. Use the right-side floor pedal to pivot the boom left or right without rotating the cab—perfect for digging right next to a foundation or fence.
  • Two-Speed Travel: For moving across a flat site, use the "Rabbit" button/pedal. Always shift back to low speed before climbing a trailer ramp or digging.

Precision Digging Tips

  • The "Knife" Technique: Don't slam the bucket into the ground. Angle the teeth at roughly 30° and "slice" into the soil while curling the bucket toward you.
  • Spoil Placement: When dumping dirt (spoils), don't swing at full speed. Smooth, controlled swings prevent "side-loading" the swing motor and keep your piles tidy for easier backfilling later.
  • Avoid Full Extension: Try not to dig with the arm fully extended. You have the most "breakout force" (digging power) when the arm and boom are at a 90° angle.

Shutdown

  • Parking: Park on level ground. Lower the boom until the attachment is flat on the floor.
  • Locking: Engage the parking brake and remove the key.

Maintenance & Return

  • Grease Every 8 Hours: The SHY15 has many pivot points. Please grease the bucket pins and boom swing daily.
  • Track Inspection: Check for rocks stuck in the rubber tracks. If the tracks feel loose, stop and call us—running a loose track can cause it to "throw" (slip off), which is a difficult field repair.
  • Cleaning: Hose off the undercarriage and bucket. Excessive dried mud in the tracks can damage the rollers.
